Run and Shoot
BOOK 4 – THE ERIC LEWIS SPORTS SERIES
After two heart breaking losses, football in the semi-final and basketball in the final, it was baseball’s turn in the playoffs. The Crater Comets win the state title in a last inning thriller. It’s a lot easier to begin the new year and a new football season while wearing a championship ring.
We have twenty returning lettermen to begin with and at least two significant transfers to bolster our roster. I’ll move from wide receiver to quarterback, my natural position, and three offensive line starters return.
The defense looks to be a bit smaller but I think more athletic overall. We will be young on that side of the football but I believe more athletic than a year ago. Coach Nick will work that group into a force before we’re too far into the season.
Our coaching staff has added Dave Nook as a receiver coach and he’ll be in charge of special teams. He will coach the inside receivers which leaves Coach Mack free to work exclusively with the wide receivers. For my money this is the best coaching staff in our league and probably in the entire state of Iowa.
A state title, a state runner up and a state semi-final in my three sports last year could be labeled a huge success. However, coming as close as we did to sweeping all three our sights are set a bit higher than in the past. We have the talent and the coaching, now it’s up to us to use that advantage to attempt an historic triple. Winning all three championships is our goal and we can’t do that unless we win the first one.
