Martin Sourdough is a homeless person who has chosen to turn his back on the corporate, material world; Willis Hancocks Jr. is a barrister, an alcoholic philanderer, and a misogynist; and Evelyn (aka Yvonne) is a prostitute. Turnstiles speaks to these social problems through the smaller scope of each character’s individual trials. There is a struggle that exists between the need to serve one’s own needs and the expectation to participate in the larger social scheme. Martin and Willis are both trying to fit into the world, but on their own terms. They are naïve, searching for an Eden-like state of being. Through a broader experience of personal fortune, misfortune, travel, and social interactions, they each learn to accept their path and take control of their own destinies.

A great read! Strong, believable characters struggling to find themselves and their respective paths in a world that is pushing them in directions they’re not sure they want to go. A very enjoyable book!

  2. Céline A.

Turnstiles is a real page turner that almost makes you feel like you are wandering the streets and watching the characters’ journeys unfold right before you. Some expected and unexpected twists, and moments of being caught off guard with certain dark moments and interesting crossroads, keep the reader wondering what may or may not happen. The goodness of humanity and all its weaknesses, and particularly hope and compassion flow through the story. Interesting plot as to how the characters lives are interwoven with one another.
    A great book indeed!

I just finished the novel. I stayed up late for a couple nights to do so.:) I just couldn’t put it down. This is an amazing first novel Andrea McKenzie Raine. I love your writing style and I was hooked from the beginning. Now you need to publish another because I’m really wanting more! I am officially recommending Turnstiles! Thank you Andrea Raine for writing such a wonderful novel. I just love a good book:).

I found myself fully engaged by characters unseemingly relatable to myself. Invested in each of their destinies by their vulnerability, nativity, and desires, this was a read quite unlike any other. Ms McKenzie Raine has managed to assemble a unique cast of characters navigating through a complex world. There is a purity and an honesty in her writing that leaves you thinking about the novel and its implications long after you have put it down. A must read.

Picked up the book and couldn’t put it down, kept me right into it. I loved EVERYTHING about it and didn’t catch on until you let me. How Kool that was. You ROCK. AWESOME JOB. I’m on the list for the next book, please. Thanks.

Excellent novel. Written in such a way that the reader gets invested and is engaged form beginning to end. It brings forth social problems we turn a blind eye to in such a way you can’t help but feel compassion for all the characters involved in this interwoven web of life.

Easy to pick up and hard to put down, I am looking forward to Andrea Raine’s next novel!

  13. Jennifer Cramer

I loved reading this book! A very touching and interesting perspective on a rich man and a poor man. I enjoyed the way the author bounced back and forth between 2 completely different lives and tied them together at the end. Highly recommend!!!

Turnstiles has an unpolished realness to it, much like a great documentary film. It’s stripped down, gritty and raw. The characters have lived at the epicentre of dysfunction for so long they have learned how to walk through fire and just keep walking – away from everything and everyone. It’s not until they collide, by fate or luck or happenstance that they finally confront themselves. I know this confrontation is just the beginning of their healing and I’m eager to follow their stories into the next book.
